In most cases natural strains (isolates) are obtained from reliable microorganism collection as American Type Culture Collection (ATCC), German Collection of Microorganisms (DSM) or Institute for Fermentation, Osaka (IFO, Japan). These strains have very basic natural productivity. As it was in case of Lovastatin strain of Aspergillus terreus research started at 10 mg per litre productivity, 8 months later mutant with 1,2 G/L productivity was obtained. At present Biolta Laboratory possesses the highest productive microorganisms for Lovastatin, Compactin or Pravastatin production in the world.

Process for strain development comprises of several stages:

  1. Data collecting on species and cultivation parameters is required for further analysis of ways to handle the strain
  2. Strain mutability evaluation includes period for probationary mutagenesis series when great variety of mutagen factor combinations affects the strain. All data for obtained mutants during this preliminary mutagenesis is analysed thoroughly for further sta
