MF2 protein is so called microbial factor (MF2) isolated from a cell extract of B. thuringiensis. It is thermostable and has molecular weight of 7239 D. Protein appears to be highly homological to cold shock proteins from Bacillus species and less homological to cold shock proteins from E. coli.
In low concentrations MF2 induces multiple resistance to viral, bacterial and fungal infections in different plants. Non specific resistance to Tobacco Mosaic Virus (TMV), Potato Virus Y (PVY), and Potato Virus X (PVX) was shown in last field experiments. Moreover treatment of potato plants with MF2 protein induced resistance to Late Blight Disease (Phytophthora infestans).
It was also shown that MF2 protein could induce resistance of rice plants to Rice Blast Disease (Pyricularia oryzae).
The gene encoding the MF2 protein was cloned and the sequence of this gene was determined. We have also determined the amino acid sequence of the protein MF2.
Genetically engineered constructions have been prepared for plant transformation experiments. Greenhouse trials of resistance of transgenic tobacco plants have shown that part of these plants containing MF2 construction are significantly resistant to PVX and PVY in comparison to non-transgenic tobacco plants of the same variety.
Transgenic Potato plants were tested in the field trials showed significant resistance to Late Blight Disease. Transgenic Potato tubers have high resistance to bacterial disease caused by Erwinia corotovora. These plants have also shown high resistance to PVX and PVY.
