COMPACTIN (Mevastatin) is not used in treatment of hyperlipidemias because of multiple side effects but it is the only source for Pravastatin production at present. At first stage strain of Penicillium citrinum produces Compactin and then the strain of Streptomyces carbophilus by microbial transformation reverts it into Pravastatin.

Compactin Technology (production and recovery)
Initial productivity of the strain of Penicillium citrinum was 40 mg/L.

Production technology

Strain-producer:
Penicillium citrinum (mutants obtained in our R&D Department from wild strain)

Product:
Compactin (Mevastatin)

Potency:
>15 G/L

Scale:
Shake flasks, 3L fermentor, 30L fermentor

Fermentation time:
216-264 hours

Main raw material list:
Soybean powder, ,Soybean peptone or Casein hydrolizate, sucrose/glycerol, mineral salts (NaNO3, MgSO4)

Analysis method:
HPLC

Compactin Recovery Technology
Though Compactin is used only as intermediate for Pravastatin production and does not require high purity we aimed to obtain as high as possible purity. This will result in economic effect in the process of Pravastatin production.

Parameters for Recovery technology are as follows:

Yield: not less than 60% (up to 80%)
Purity: not less then 90% (up to 95%)
